Spotlight On: Toast, A New Principal Participating Organization

Welcome Toast, a new Principal Participating Organization (PPO) at the PCI Security Standards Council! In this special spotlight edition of our PCI Perspectives Blog, Toast’s Vice President of Global Technical Governance Shane Hamilton introduces us to his company and how they are helping to shape the future of payment security.

Tell us about your company.

Toast provides a powerful all-in-one platform that is built for restaurants by restaurant people. Toast provides a single platform of software as a service (SaaS) products and financial technology solutions that give restaurants everything they need to run their business, including point of sale, payments, supplier management, digital ordering and delivery, marketing and loyalty, and team management.

Why did your company decide to become a Principal Participating Organization?

We are excited to provide unique perspectives and insights that will help inform and contribute to the evolution of payment security through updates and changes to the standards and programs which PCI SSC stewards.

Which benefits are you most looking forward to as a Principal Participating Organization?

We are most looking forward to participating in the Roadmap Roundtable Group and Technology Guidance Group. Moreover, we recognize that it’s a tremendous opportunity to contribute so directly to the roadmap of the PCI Security Standards Council at both a strategic and technological level. In these discussions, we know that our voice will make a difference, and we hope it will result in security requirements that will better serve the restaurant industry. In addition, participation in various working groups and committees within the PCI SSC gives us the opportunity to address specific industry challenges in an open expert forum and contribute to innovative solutions that will benefit the industry as a whole.

Why is it important for companies to get more involved with the PCI Security Standards Council, especially at the Principal Participating Organization level?

Over the years, the PCI Security Standards Council has developed many important programs, standards, and related initiatives that have influenced every aspect of payment transaction handling. This is an incredibly important organization to engage with to help ensure that the standards continue to evolve with the needs of the payment industry as well as adjust to the ever-changing threat landscape.

What are some payment security topics that you’re interested in collaborating on?

There’s so much opportunity for collaboration. As a Principal Participating Organization, one of the areas of greatest opportunity I see is that we will be able to contribute to discussions around how objective payment security standards can enable the rapid adoption of new technologies that will move the whole payment industry, including restaurants, forward, while maintaining a high bar for the security of payment data.
